Sunday Worship ~ Bringing the message of teranga to the Global Mercy ship community

In travel commentaries, "teranga", is often simply defined as "good hospitality". This Wolof (language of Senegal, Mauritania, and The Gambia) word embraces the concepts of respect, community and solidarity. It is an important practice in Senegal because it involves a set of values. Teranga reflects how one treats a guest with open arms and a seat around the bowlDuring my stay in Dakar, Senegal, the community welcomed us with expressions of teranga. I believe the concept of teranga fits God's desires for His world. The world is a healthier place when people interact with kindness in a caring community context. May we pray for loving our neighbors in a teranga way by showing inclusion, warmth, friendliness and selflessness. Teranga reflects shalom which is mentioned throughout the Bible starting in Genesis.

"He said, "Shalom be to you. Don't be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your silver" ~ Genesis 43:23

"Shalom I leave with you. My shalom I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful" ~ John 14:27

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" ~ Ephesians 4:2-6

Prayers for our story,

learning to show teranga,

expressing shalom.
