The Global Mercy Ship ~ 27 May 2022

Dakar, Senegal

The crew aboard the Global Mercy ship quietly greeted sister ship, Africa Mercy, as we came into the Dakar, Senegal port on 27 May 2022. Arrival into Senegal was a respectful time as we joined the country's three days of mourning. Senegalese families and the community mourn the loss of the 11 babies who died in a hospital fire. It is time for prayer and corrective action as we seek healing in a world filled with many tragedies, including the 19 children and 2 teachers killed in Uvalde, Texas.

Feelings of sorrow are mixed with rejoicing as the Global Mercy begins her first mission as a hospital ship. The Mercy Ships mission is to "bring hope and healing to the forgotten poor, following the 2,000 - year - old model of Jesus". The hospital ships bring healing by offering surgeries, eye procedures, and dental care.  

There is also a promotion of hope with the Mercy Ships medical capacity building plan. Medical, nursing, and dental students, in many African countries, are encouraged to join the training opportunities offered by Mercy Ships. Additionally, many people from Senegal will come onboard one of the Mercy Ships, for work experience in other areas such as hotel and restaurant management. I will be engaged in the medical capacity building plan by helping people find their training location in the Global Mercy hospital. In many African nations there is a need for more training after school since students do not have internships or residency programs.



The Mercy Ships ~ Africa Mercy (left) and Global Mercy (right) docked in Dakar, Senegal. I live on the Global Mercy ship, on Deck 10, with a cabin next to the bridge, on starboard side. The Bridge of a ship is the command center through which all communication, work requests and information is relayed. The crew on sister ship, Africa Mercy, was overwhelmed by the size of the newly built Global Mercy!

                                               The Global Mercy Surgical Ship Experience The Mercy Ships organization continues to offer surgical support in Africa. The decision to focus on Africa developed with the realization of the great need for free and safe surgery. Fifty percent of the West African population is located along the coast. The Africa Mercy and Global Mercy surgical ships offer care to those living on the coast and also throughout the country.  Globally, 5 billion people lack access to safe surgery. Children and adults die every day from treatable surgical treatment.  Managing the operational details of a ship requires a full time captain, engineers, and many deck crew to keep everything in excellent ship shape. Joining the Global Mercy ship

  May 2, 2022 Dear family and friends, My Dream Volunteering on a hospital ship became an interest of mine over 50 years ago. During my youth there was a hospital ship called the SS Hope which was in operation from 1960 to 1974. My dream created a plan to finish a nursing program and join the hospital ship. However, when I graduated from Mankato West High School, the Hope Project retired the hospital ship, putting a stop to my dream. I moved on to completing my nursing degree at Saint Olaf College, and focusing on family, more school, and work.  Life continued with many blessings to help manage sorrow. During the pandemic years, I traveled from one family home to the next, and enjoyed time with multiple generations. In December 2021, I said goodbye to my father and in April 2022 welcomed a ninth grandchild. Now I am inspired to find adventure in my third trimester of life.
